All my life, I wanted to become a mother. I struggled with infertility only to have difficult pregnancies resulting in two premature births. My oldest son was barely two when my second child was born at 27 weeks. After a 4 month NICU stay and years of PT and OT, he was deemed "normal". However, my oldest child had already developed this sense of protection for his younger brother and loved helping him learn and grow.
When my oldest entered Kindergarten, I had one of my best moments, thus far, as a mother. At a parent-teacher conference, his teacher shared with me how there was a "special" student in the class that the other children often shunned. But not my Jack. He had taken this student under his wing and helped him to integrate socially by being his best friend. She told me how this child's mother was so grateful and wanted to thank me personally.
When putting him to bed that night, I asked him about this "special" little boy and why he had chosen to be his friend. He simply said, "Well mom, Tyler was OUR special little guy and I just thought that if
Tyler was at school he would need a friend so that the kids wouldn't make fun of him. So, I decided to do that for my new friend." Children learn what they live and I'm grateful to have been a small part in the development of such a caring and wonderful human being.
